Ottó Tolnai
/Hungary, 1940Ottó Tolnai, born in Kaniža in 1940, is a poet, prose writer, playwright and translator. He belongs to the ethnic Hungarian minority in the region of Vojvodina, Serbia. He studied Hungarian literature and philosophy in Novi Sad and Zagreb. He published his first book of poetry „Homoru versek“ in 1963. In 1965 he began writing for the avantgardist magazine Új Symposion („New Symposion“), which was founded in the same year, and later served as its editor-in-chief until the magazine was banned. For his work he received a number of literary prizes. Tolnai is considered to be one of the most important contemporary Hungarian authors.
