Pierre Nepveu
/Canada, 1946Pierre Nepveu (1946, Canada) is Professor emeritus from the University of Montreal. He has taught Quebec literature and poetry between 1972 and 2009. Since the early 1970s, he has published nine books of poetry, a comprehensive anthology of Quebec poetry, two novels and many essays dealing with contemporary culture and literature, the redefinition of identities and the relation to landscape and geography, both in the Quebec and North-American context. Over the years, he has been active both on the academic and literary fronts, writing numerous articles and reviews and participating in many conferences and public readings, in Canada as well as abroad, notably in Ireland, Belgium, France, Italy, Poland and Brazil. Two of his books of poetry, Romans-fleuves and Lignes aériennes have received the Governor General’s Award in 1997 and 2003, and his book of essays Intérieurs du Nouveau-Monde was awarded the same honour in 1998. Translations in English of his books of poetry, especially Mirabel (by Judith Cowan) and more recently The Major Verbs (by Don Winkler), have been praised as major achievements. Pierre Nepveu is also the author of a biography of Quebec’s most renowned poet, Gaston Miron. His overall literary contribution and commitment have earned him the Prix Athanase-David given by the Government of Quebec and the Order of Canada.
