(Cuba), born in 1955. He is one of Cuba’s most noteworthy contemporary writers and many of his eleven books of poetry have been recipients of important awards. During the eighties he wrote for and was the editor of El Caimán Barbudo, one of his country’s leading cultural magazines, where he published numerous articles on literature and film. He has compiled three anthologies; Cuba: En su lugar la poesía (1982), Usted es la culpable (1985), and El pasado del cielo: La nueva y novísima poesía cubana (1994). He has published various critical editions, introductions, and essays on Spanish American poets from wich his essay on Gabriel García Márquez’s non-fiction, Cien años de solidaridad (1986), was awarded the Enrique José Varona Prize. He is an Associate Professor of Spanish at Kenyon College, USA and translates American authors.
