He has taught comparative literature, translation studies, creative writing and contemporary Turkish literature at Middlesex University (London), Sabanci University (Istanbul) and the University of Cyprus (Nicosia). In the autumn of 2008, he was a Writer in Residence at the “Maison de littérature et des écrivains” in Paris, as one of 26 European writers invited by the Presidency of France, representing Cyprus. His work has been translated into more than 20 languages, arranged to music, and adapted for the stage. His first poetry collection won the “1985 Turkish Academy Poetry Prize” and the “A. Kadir Poetry Prize”, and his first novel won the “1995 Cevdet Kudret Novel” prize. His study on Cypriot poetry over 3000 years won the “2005 Memet Fuat Literary Criticism and Study” prize in Istanbul.
