Brane Senegačnik
A Slovenian poet, essayist, classical philologist and translator, and a Corresponding Member of the Slovenian Academy of Sciences and Arts (SAZU), he was born in Ljubljana in 1966, where he still lives and teaches at the Faculty of Arts. Among other things, he translates ancient tragedy and poetry, including Seneca’s Ojdip and Pindar’s complete oeuvre, and also explores lyric poetry from a theoretical perspective in books such as Smrt lirike? and Lirični prostor. According to the jury of the Prešeren Foundation Award, his poetry is “a supreme voice of pure lyric poetry that is at once modernist, impressive, confessional and existential,” continuing the development of Slovenian lyric poetry from Jenko and Murn to Kosovel. In 2021, he received the Prešeren Foundation Award for his collection Pogovori z nikomer, while his eighth poetry collection, Prosojnosti, received the Jenko Award last year – the highest distinction awarded for a Slovenian poetry collection.
