Maxime Coton

/Belgium, 1986

Maxime Coton (1986, Belgium) is a writer and director living and working in Brussels. For his films and books, he has won several awards in Belgium and France. In his artistic work, he tries to find balance between poetic and political topics. He has published four poetry books: La biographie de Morgane Eldä in 2004, Le geste ordinaire in 2011, Où votre oeil s'efface in 2013 and L'imparfait des langues in 2014, as well as a collection of short stories Resplendir in 2014.

Did I need to learn to write before I could read your palms? Your palms cracked from the cold

and ignorance?

I listen.

They say: “You will be a fracture. The one who begot you carries it in him. It will be your cry,

and the name you are given will be that of reconciliation.”

So, my father, your hand makes a st but it does not clench: no ght is calling you.

In my blindness, I understand.

You were born, unaware, a utopia’s failure.

I understand this, and many other things, because I can read and write. Because I have been

given the time to see.

A-t-il fallu que j’apprenne à écrire pour lire dans tes paumes ? Tes paumes gercées par le froid et l’ignorance ?

Je les écoute.

Il y est dit : « Tu seras une fracture. Celui qui t’a engendré la porte en lui. Tu la crieras et le nom donné sera celui de la réconciliation ».

Alors Papa, ton poing se ferme, mais ne se tend pas : aucun combat ne l'invite.

Aveugle, je comprends.

Sans le savoir, tu es né, faillite d’une utopie.

Je comprends cela et bien d’autres choses parce que je sais lire et écrire. Parce que le temps m’est donné de regarder.
