Péter Závada

Péter Závada (1982) is a poet, playwright, translator, and university lecturer from Budapest, Hungary. He was a 2024 alumnus of the International Writing Program (IWP) at the University of Iowa. He is the author of six poetry collections with Libri / Jelenkor Publishing, including Wreck in Lee (2017), which received the Horváth Péter Literary Scholarship for the best poetry collection of the year. Besides being a playwright, Závada is a dramaturg as well. In the past, he's regularly worked with internationally acclaimed theatre directors such as Andrei Şerban, Árpád Schilling, and Viktor Bodó. Závada's plays and performance texts have been staged in the largest Budapest theaters, such as Katona, Örkény and Trafó, as well as in Nyitra, Slovakia, and Dresden and Passau, Germany. He has received the Critics’ Choice Award for Best Hungarian Theatre Production (2021). He currently holds a full-time position as an assistant professor in the Department of Aesthetics at Eötvös Loránd University, where he teaches philosophy, performance theory, and creative writing. In 2022, his PhD dissertation won the prestigious Cogito Prize for the best philosophy dissertation of the year.
