Tomas Venclova

Born 1937 in Klaipėda. Poet, essayist, translator, publicist and literary historian. In 1960 he graduated from Lithuanian language and literature. He has worked at the history institute and has lectured at the university in Vilnius. In 1977 he emigrated to the USA. From 1980 until his retirement he held lectures on Slavic literatures at Yale. He has published more than 20 books, including seven poetry collections. His poetry has been translated into more than 20 languages. In 1990 he recived the Vilenica international award, in 2000 he was awarded with the Lithuanian National Prize for Culture and Art, and in 2005 he won the Yotving prize for his poetry colection Sankirta (Crossroads).
