Thematic Focus: How Is a Hit Made? Zoran Predin, Alien, Dario Nožič Serini

Few Slovenian artists can boast an extensive body of original lyrics that have been set to music. Even fewer have given us timeless hits while maintaining their creative energy throughout their careers. Songwriting often proves to be a discipline even more demanding than writing poetry, despite requiring the soul and dedication of a true poet. How can we stay true to the call of poetry within us while still meeting the expectations of an audience? Can the magic of writing that first truly meaningful song ever be recreated with the same intensity as first love? Is an individual artist’s mastery enough, or does something else matter? And if so, what exactly is it? Is routine the enemy of inspiration?
